In just over two and a half decades, Oceanco has evolved from a small South African enterprise to a global heavyweight in custom superyacht production. Initially spearheaded by CEO Richard Hein and a group of private investors, the firm began operations in Durban, South Africa. Hulls and superstructures were crafted there before being shipped to the Netherlands for interior and design finishing. After acquiring a facility in Alblasserdam, Netherlands, the company’s trajectory soared, especially following its acquisition in 2002 by Greek magnate Theodore Angelopoulos, who recalibrated its focus exclusively on the 80m+ megayacht segment. This pivot led to the creation of the award-winning ‘Y Generation’ of Oceanco yachts, elevating the shipyard’s capacity to simultaneously build five yachts, all exceeding 80 meters in length. In 2010, the Dutch shipyard was acquired by Dr Mohammed Al Barwani. Their collaboration has resulted in the creation of several remarkable superyachts, such as the 90-meter “DAR” and the 109-meter “Bravo Eugenia,” which are known for their cutting-edge design, advanced technology, and luxurious amenities.

Oceanco’s design philosophy balances luxury with cutting-edge technology. Specializing in custom-made megayachts, the Dutch shipyard produces vessels ranging from 80 to 140 meters, encompassing full displacement motor yachts and eco-friendly sailing yachts. The focus is on high-quality craftsmanship, innovation, and meeting customer expectations. Their vessels often feature futuristic elements such as infinity pools, digitalized ‘smart yacht’ systems, and glass-centric designs. They actively collaborate with creative minds in the industry to bring about visionary and eco-conscious designs, thereby consistently setting new industry standards. Among Oceanco’s numerous prestigious projects, two yachts stand out: ALFA NERO and BLACK PEARL. ALFA NERO, an 82-meter marvel, set a precedent as the first superyacht with a multi-purpose infinity pool that can convert into a helipad or dance floor. BLACK PEARL, at 106.7 meters, is a DynaRig three-masted sailing yacht, recognized as the world’s largest and most ecologically advanced sailing yacht. As of now, they focus on the 90m+ segment, averaging two yacht deliveries per year with 37 yachts built to date.
